Botulism
Botulismus · Botulismus
What it is
Paralysis by botulinum toxin, which blocks the nerve signal to muscle — from home-canned or fermented food, contaminated wounds, or spores in an infant's gut; survivable with antitoxin and ventilation, recovery takes weeks to months.
Symptoms & signs
- Double vision and drooping eyelids
- slurred speech and difficulty swallowing
- dry mouth
- weakness descending from the head to the arms and legs
- breathing failure
- no fever and a clear mind
- infants: constipation, weak cry, floppiness
🚩 Get help if…
- call 112 / 911 now Drooping eyelids, double vision or trouble swallowing
- call 112 / 911 now Slurred speech or weakness spreading down the body
- call 112 / 911 now Struggling to breathe
- call 112 / 911 now Baby with weak cry, poor feeding and floppiness
Where it strikes
- Nervous system
- Muscles
- Extraocular muscles
- Diaphragm
Medical treatment
- Clinical diagnosis; toxin testing of blood, stool and food
- Antitoxin as early as possible — stops the toxin already circulating, not the paralysis already there trials support
- mechanical ventilation, sometimes for months
- Human botulism immune globulin for infants — shorter hospital stays trials support
- wound cleaning and antibiotics in wound botulism
- public-health alert to find the food
Natural & lifestyle
- Pressure-can low-acid foods at home; 10 minutes' boiling destroys the toxin
- no honey before 12 months of age
- discard bulging cans
Emerging & experimental
- Small-molecule toxin blockers
- human monoclonal antitoxins
Alternative, off-label & anecdotal
Approaches used outside the guidelines, with what their supporters report and what testing has found so far.
- Laxatives or enemas to clear toxin from the gut — used in some protocols; unproven anecdotal / traditional
- Activated charcoal and 'detox' remedies — no effect on toxin already bound to nerves anecdotal / traditional
