What it is
The two tendons that lift the thumb swell in their tunnel at the wrist — new parents lifting babies, thumbs on phones.
Symptoms & signs
- Pain on the thumb side of the wrist
- swelling over the radius
- pain gripping or lifting
- pain when the thumb is tucked in the fist and the wrist bent (Finkelstein test)

- see a doctor soon Numbness or tingling in the thumb or fingers
- see a doctor soon Pain after a fall on the hand (fracture)
- see a doctor soon No better after 6 weeks of rest and a splint
