Radiation injury
Morbus radiationis · Poškození zářením (nemoc z ozáření)
What it is
Ionising radiation kills the fastest-dividing cells first: marrow, gut, then skin.
Symptoms & signs
- Nausea and vomiting within hours
- marrow failure at 2–3 weeks
- diarrhoea
- skin burns
- hair loss
🚩 Get help if…
- call 112 / 911 now Vomiting within hours of a radiation exposure
- call 112 / 911 now Bleeding, bruising or fever in the weeks after exposure
- call 112 / 911 now Severe diarrhoea or confusion after exposure
- see a doctor soon Red, blistering or peeling skin after exposure or radiotherapy
Where it strikes
Medical treatment
- Decontamination
- G-CSF
- transfusion support
- potassium iodide for radioiodine
- antibiotics
- stem-cell transplant in severe exposure
Natural & lifestyle
- Distance, shielding, time
- iodine prophylaxis where indicated
- dosimetry monitoring
Emerging & experimental
- Radiomitigators
- regenerative marrow therapies
Alternative, off-label & anecdotal
Approaches used outside the guidelines, with what their supporters report and what testing has found so far.
- Apple pectin for caesium after Chernobyl — small studies of faster clearance early / small studies
- Iodised table salt instead of potassium iodide — far too little iodine, and dangerous amounts of salt not confirmed in trials
