Where it strikes
Medical treatment
- MMR vaccine, two doses — about 97% protected after one dose; rare fever fits and low platelets
- check immunity before pregnancy
- paracetamol for fever and joint pain
- keep away from pregnant women until 7 days after the rash
Natural & lifestyle
- Rest and fluids
- no vaccine during pregnancy — vaccinate before or after
Emerging & experimental
- Global rubella elimination programmes
- hyperimmune globulin after exposure in pregnancy (limited evidence)
Alternative, off-label & anecdotal
Approaches used outside the guidelines, with what their supporters report and what testing has found so far.
- Vitamins A and C for rash illnesses — general immune support; not studied in rubella anecdotal / traditional
- Homeopathic nosodes instead of vaccination — a small 2018 trial found no antibody response; congenital rubella returns where vaccination falls not confirmed in trials
