Nucleus & DNA
Nucleus cellulae et DNA · Jádro a DNA
Blood & marrow
Looks like
A round body in the centre of most cells, holding about 2 metres of DNA coiled into 46 chromosomes.
What it does
Stores the genes and controls which proteins the cell makes.
Keeping it well
Ultraviolet light, tobacco smoke and radiation damage DNA; faults that build up can lead to cancer. Mature red cells have no nucleus.
