Thymus
Thymus · Brzlík
Lymphatic & immune
Looks like
A soft, pinkish gland of two lobes behind the upper breastbone, large in childhood and replaced mostly by fat after puberty.
What it does
Trains T cells to recognise germs while ignoring the body's own tissues.
Keeping it well
Nothing to do in adults. Tumours of it (thymomas) are rare and often linked with myasthenia gravis; drooping eyelids, double vision or weakness that worsens through the day needs a neurologist, who checks the thymus with a scan.
