Extra heartbeats (ectopics and palpitations)
Extrasystolae · Extrasystoly (přeskakující srdce)
What it is
Early beats from the upper (atrial) or lower (ventricular) chambers — almost everyone has some; felt as a skip or thump. Usually harmless, but very frequent ones or those with a heart disease need a check.
Symptoms & signs
- A skipped beat, flutter or thump
- brief pause, then a stronger beat
- more at rest, lying on the left, after caffeine or alcohol
- dizziness or fainting — see a doctor

Where it strikes
Medical treatment
- ECG and 24-hour monitor
- echo if frequent or with symptoms or family history
- reassurance for a normal heart
- Beta blockers for troublesome symptoms trials support
- catheter ablation for very frequent ventricular ectopics weakening the heart
Natural & lifestyle
- Less alcohol and stimulants (energy drinks, decongestants)
- good sleep
- regular exercise
- Cutting coffee — a trial found no rise in atrial ectopics, a small rise in ventricular ones mixed evidence
Emerging & experimental
- Wearable ECG for long monitoring
Alternative, off-label & anecdotal
Approaches used outside the guidelines, with what their supporters report and what testing has found so far.
- Magnesium — reduced ectopics in one small trial mixed evidence
- Hawthorn — traditional heart tonic; no ectopic trials anecdotal / traditional
- Yoga — fewer palpitations in small studies mixed evidence
