Heart & arteries
Looks like
A fist-sized muscular pump with four chambers, sitting slightly left behind the breastbone.
What it does
Pushes about 5 litres of blood a minute, some 100 000 beats a day.
Keeping it well
Movement, sleep, and treating high blood pressure — the best-supported of the lot. Statins for someone who has already had a heart attack prevent about 1 event in 25 over five years; for low-risk people with no disease the absolute gain is nearer 1 in 100. In blinded trials the drug itself causes muscle symptoms in about 1 person in 100 and slightly raises the risk of diabetes.
