Fibrous skeleton of heart
Skeleton fibrosum cordis · Vazivová kostra srdce
Heart & arteries
Looks like
Four tough fibrous rings around the heart valves, joined together in the middle of the heart.
What it does
Anchors the valves and muscle and electrically separates the atria from the ventricles, leaving one path for the heartbeat signal.
Keeping it well
Calcification with age can press on the conduction path and cause heart block; a slow pulse with fainting needs a doctor.
