One electrical circuit racing round the right atrium about 300 times a minute — a cousin of atrial fibrillation, with the same stroke risk, and usually curable by ablation.
Symptoms & signs
- Fast regular palpitations (often 150 a minute)
- breathlessness
- dizziness
- tiredness
- sometimes none

Where it strikes
Medical treatment
- ECG
- rate control (beta blockers)
- anticoagulation by stroke score
- cardioversion
- catheter ablation of the circuit (over 90% success)
Natural & lifestyle
- Limit alcohol
- treat sleep apnoea and high blood pressure
- weight control
Emerging & experimental
- Pulsed-field ablation
- wearable ECG screening
Alternative, off-label & anecdotal
Approaches used outside the guidelines, with what their supporters report and what testing has found so far.
- Magnesium — may help rate control; small studies early / small studies
- Hawthorn — a traditional heart herb; interacts with heart drugs anecdotal / traditional
- Yoga — small trials reduce episodes (in atrial fibrillation) early / small studies
