Superficial thrombophlebitis

What it is
A clot in a vein just under the skin, usually a varicose vein of the leg: red, hard and tender along its course, and sometimes the tip of a deep clot.
Symptoms & signs
- Red, warm, tender cord under the skin
- hard lump along the vein
- swelling around it
- often in varicose veins

- Ultrasound to measure length and nearness to the deep veins
- NSAIDs and warm compresses
- fondaparinux or low-molecular-weight heparin if 5 cm or more
- treat the varicose veins later
