Great saphenous vein
Vena saphena magna · Velká skrytá žíla
Veins
Looks like
The longest vein of the body, running under the skin from the inner ankle up the inner leg to the groin.
What it does
Drains blood from the skin of the leg into the deep veins; surgeons use it for heart bypass grafts.
Keeping it well
Its valves fail with age and pregnancy, causing varicose veins. A hard, red, tender cord along it is a clot that may need a scan.
