Nipple & areola
Papilla mammaria et areola mammae · Bradavka a dvorec
Skin & appendages
Looks like
The raised nipple with the ring of darker skin around it, dotted with small bumps that are oil glands.
What it does
Delivers milk through several duct openings, and the areola's glands keep the skin supple during breastfeeding.
Keeping it well
An eczema-like rash on one nipple that does not heal can be Paget's disease of the breast, an early cancer; a newly turned-in nipple or bloody discharge also needs checking. Long-standing inverted nipples on both sides are normal.
