Azygos & hemiazygos veins
Vena azygos et vena hemiazygos · Nepárová a polonepárová žíla
Veins
Looks like
A vein climbing the right side of the spine, with a smaller partner (hemiazygos) on the left, arching over the right lung root into the superior vena cava.
What it does
Drains the back and chest wall and forms a bypass between the lower and upper body veins if the main ones block.
Keeping it well
Nothing to do for it; it enlarges and carries more blood when the inferior or superior vena cava is blocked, which is how such a blockage is sometimes found on scans.
