Fifth metatarsal bone
Os metatarsi V · Pátá kost nártní
Skeleton
Looks like
The long bone behind the little toe, with a knob at its base you can feel on the outer foot.
What it does
Supports the outer edge of the foot; the peroneus brevis tendon inserts on its base.
Keeping it well
Its base breaks in ankle twists. A fracture just beyond the base (Jones fracture) heals poorly and may need surgery.
