The large vein on each side of the neck, running down beside the carotid artery under the sternocleidomastoid muscle.
What it does
Drains blood from the brain, face and neck and joins the subclavian vein behind the collarbone.
Keeping it well
A common route for central lines, placed under ultrasound. Its pulse at the neck lets doctors judge pressure on the right side of the heart.
