Sesamoid bone of foot
Ossa sesamoidea pedis · Sezamské kůstky nohy
Skeleton
Looks like
Small bean-shaped bones inside tendons, chiefly two under the head of the first metatarsal in the ball of the foot.
What it does
Act like pulleys that increase tendon leverage and absorb weight at the ball of the big toe.
Keeping it well
Can inflame or fracture (sesamoiditis) in runners and dancers; a split sesamoid on X-ray may be normal.
