Falciform ligament
Ligamentum falciforme hepatis · Srpovitý vaz jater
Fascia & connective tissue
Looks like
A sickle-shaped fold of peritoneum from the front of the liver to the underside of the diaphragm and the front belly wall, with the round ligament (the closed umbilical vein) in its free edge.
What it does
Tethers the liver and divides it on the surface into its right and left anatomical lobes.
Keeping it well
In liver cirrhosis the veins beside the round ligament can reopen and swell round the navel (caput medusae), a sign of high portal pressure.
