The hearing part of the eighth cranial nerve, running from the spiral cochlea through the inner ear canal to the brainstem.
What it does
Carries sound signals from the hair cells of the cochlea to the brain.
Keeping it well
A benign tumour on the nerve sheath (vestibular schwannoma) causes one-sided hearing loss and ringing — get an MRI. Sudden deafness needs care within days.
