The balance part of the eighth cranial nerve, lying beside the cochlear nerve in the inner ear canal.
What it does
Carries head-movement and gravity signals from the semicircular canals and otolith organs to the brainstem.
Keeping it well
Inflammation (vestibular neuritis) causes days of severe spinning vertigo. Vertigo with weakness, slurred speech or double vision is a stroke sign.
