A two-bellied muscle under the jaw: the back belly starts behind the ear, the front belly at the chin, joined by a tendon looped to the hyoid bone.
What it does
Opens the mouth against resistance and lifts the hyoid bone when swallowing.
Keeping it well
Its two bellies have different nerves (facial and trigeminal). Jaw pain with clicking or locking usually comes from the jaw joint, not this muscle.
