A deep calf muscle on the outer back of the shin whose tendon crosses behind the ankle to the tip of the big toe.
What it does
Bends the big toe and gives the final push-off in walking and on tiptoe.
Keeping it well
Ballet dancers get tendinitis of it behind the ankle; its tendon is used to repair old Achilles tears.
