A small triangular gland capping the top of each kidney, with an outer cortex and inner medulla.
What it does
Makes cortisol, aldosterone, sex hormone precursors and adrenaline; its medulla works like a sympathetic ganglion.
Keeping it well
Incidental lumps on scans are common and usually benign; rare tumours cause high blood pressure spells and need tests.
