What it does
Transfers the whole body weight from leg to foot and allows up-down and side-to-side ankle motion.
Keeping it well
Mostly covered by cartilage with a fragile blood supply; fractures can lead to bone death. Persistent pain after a sprain may be a cartilage lesion on its dome.
