Looks like
A long thin muscle with two bellies joined by a tendon, running from the top edge of the shoulder blade across the neck to the hyoid bone.
What it does
Pulls the hyoid bone and voice box down after swallowing; may tense the neck fascia to keep the large neck vein open.
Keeping it well
Powered by the ansa cervicalis nerve loop. Rarely injured; surgeons use it as a landmark in neck operations.
