Scalenus anterior
Musculus scalenus anterior · Přední kýčovitý sval
Muscles
Looks like
A strap muscle deep in the side of the neck, running from the neck vertebrae down to the first rib.
What it does
Lifts the first rib during deep breathing and bends the neck to its side; the arm's nerves and main artery pass just behind it.
Keeping it well
Tightness here can squeeze those nerves (thoracic outlet syndrome). Arm tingling with hand weakness or colour change needs a doctor.
