A strap muscle beneath the sternohyoid, running from the back of the breastbone up to the thyroid cartilage.

What it does

Pulls the voice box down after it rises in swallowing.

Keeping it well

It lies directly on the thyroid gland; a large goitre can stretch and flatten it.
