A butterfly-shaped core in the middle of the spinal cord, its front and back wings called the horns.
What it does
The back horns receive sensation coming in; the front horns hold the nerve cells that fire the muscles.
Keeping it well
Damaged by injury, loss of blood supply or viruses such as polio. Weakness with wasting and twitching muscles needs a neurologist.
