A triangular bone of five fused vertebrae at the base of the spine, wedged between the hip bones.
What it does
Transfers the weight of the spine to the pelvis and forms the back of the pelvic ring.
Keeping it well
Pain in the buttocks worse after rest may be sacroiliitis; new back pain with leg weakness or numbness around the anus is an emergency.
