The muscle along the outer side of the front of the shinbone, its tendon crossing the front of the ankle.
What it does
Lifts the foot and toes so they clear the ground with each step.
Keeping it well
Pain along the shin in runners is often shin splints. A foot that slaps down or drags suddenly is foot drop and needs a nerve check.
