Short strong fibres at the back of the chest, joining the neck of each rib to the side process of its vertebra.
What it does
Holds the rib close to the spine and steadies the joint on which the rib swings during breathing.
Keeping it well
Strain or joint irritation here gives sharp pain beside the spine on deep breaths. Mostly self-limiting.
