Iliohypogastric nerve
Nervus iliohypogastricus · Kyčelně-podbřišní nerv
Nervous system
Looks like
A nerve from the first lumbar nerve running around the lower belly wall between its muscle layers, just above the ilio-inguinal nerve.
What it does
Supplies the lower abdominal muscles and brings feeling from the skin above the pubic bone and the side of the hip.
Keeping it well
Can be caught in low abdominal incisions (e.g. caesarean), causing lasting burning pain; nerve blocks help.
