The first stretch of the ileum, following on from the jejunum, in the middle and lower belly.
What it does
Absorbs nutrients and water; the ileum has more lymph tissue (Peyer patches) than the jejunum.
Keeping it well
Mainly a descriptive region; a Meckel diverticulum, present in about 2%, sits on the ileum usually within 60 cm of its end.
