The middle loops of the ileum, largely in the lower belly and pelvis, with thinner walls and more fat in its mesentery.
What it does
Absorbs nutrients and water and hosts immune tissue that samples gut contents.
Keeping it well
Crohn disease can affect patches anywhere here; imaging with MR enterography shows it.
