The short, thick palm bone of the thumb, between the trapezium and the thumb's first phalanx.
What it does
Gives the thumb its wide range of movement through the saddle joint at its base.
Keeping it well
Fractures at its base (Bennett fracture) enter the joint and often need surgery.
