A flat triangular cartilage on each side of the middle third of the nose, continuous with the septal cartilage and tucked under the nasal bone.
What it does
Forms the side walls of the middle nose and, with the septum, the internal nasal valve, the narrowest point of the airway.
Keeping it well
If it caves in (after injury or surgery) breathing through the nose gets harder; spreader grafts can fix it.
