Two thin muscle bands crossing in an X on the back of the arytenoid cartilages, continuing into the fold beside the epiglottis.
What it does
Pulls the arytenoid cartilages together, closing the back of the vocal cords and narrowing the airway entrance.
Keeping it well
Powered by the recurrent laryngeal nerve. Persistent hoarseness, especially in smokers, needs a laryngoscopy.
