Muscles
Looks like
Three short muscles forming the ball of the thumb: abductor pollicis brevis, flexor pollicis brevis and opponens pollicis; mostly supplied by the median nerve.
What it does
Swing the thumb across the palm to meet the fingertips (opposition), which makes pinching and gripping possible.
Keeping it well
Wasting of this pad is a late sign of carpal tunnel syndrome, when the median nerve has been squeezed a long time; at that stage release surgery should not wait.
