Anterior longitudinal ligament
Ligamentum longitudinale anterius · Přední podélný vaz
Joints & cartilage
Looks like
A broad strong band running down the front of the vertebral bodies and discs, from the skull base to the sacrum.
What it does
Stops the spine bending too far backward and holds the front of the discs in place.
Keeping it well
Torn in whiplash and hyperextension injuries. In DISH and ankylosing spondylitis it turns to bone and stiffens the spine.
