Nervous system
Looks like
The large sensory root of the fifth cranial nerve, entering the side of the pons from the trigeminal ganglion.
What it does
Carries touch, pain and temperature from the whole face, eye, nose and mouth into the brainstem.
Keeping it well
A looping artery pressing on it is a common cause of trigeminal neuralgia; surgery can relieve it.
