A large sac between the gluteus maximus tendon band and the outer surface of the greater trochanter.
What it does
Lets the big buttock muscle and iliotibial band slide over the bony point of the hip.
Keeping it well
Once blamed for most outer hip pain ('trochanteric bursitis'); today gluteal tendinopathy is known as the usual cause. Treated with loading exercise.
