Intervertebral disk of axis
Discus intervertebralis C II–C III · Meziobratlová ploténka C2–C3
Joints & cartilage
Looks like
The pad between the axis (C2) and C3; the first true disc of the spine, as C1–C2 has none: a small disc, thicker at the front, giving the neck its forward curve. A tough fibre ring surrounds a soft gel core.
What it does
Joins the two vertebrae, absorbs shock and lets this level bend and twist a little.
Keeping it well
A bulge at C2–C3 can pinch the C3 nerve, giving pain or tingling in the back of the head and upper neck. Weak or clumsy hands and legs mean cord pressure and need prompt review.
