Carina
Carina tracheae · Rozvidlení průdušnice (karina)
Respiratory system
Looks like
The ridge of cartilage at the bottom of the windpipe, behind the upper breastbone, where it forks into the two main bronchi.
What it does
Divides the airflow to the two lungs and is one of the most sensitive cough triggers.
Keeping it well
Anything touching it sets off violent coughing — a defence against inhaled objects. A widened carina on a scan can mean swollen lymph nodes beneath it, which then need explaining.
