Scaphoid
Os scaphoideum · Kost člunková
Skeleton
Looks like
A small curved bone shaped like a boat at the base of the thumb, bridging the two rows of wrist bones.
What it does
Links the two rows of carpal bones and steadies the wrist.
Keeping it well
It breaks in a fall on the hand and may not show on the first X-ray. Tenderness in the hollow at the base of the thumb needs a splint and follow-up, as it can die from poor blood supply.
