Surfactant layer

Respiratory system
Looks like
A film of fat and protein, thinner than a cell, lining the inside of every air sac.
What it does
Lowers surface tension so the tiny sacs do not collapse on breathing out and inflate with little effort.
Keeping it well
Babies born very early have too little, causing breathing distress; steroid injections to the mother before an expected early birth help the baby's lungs make it, and surfactant can be given into the newborn's windpipe.
