Short bands on the back of the hand, joining the second row of wrist bones to the bases of the hand bones.
What it does
Hold the bases of the hand bones to the wrist; the index and middle ones are almost rigid.
Keeping it well
Injured in punches and falls, sometimes with fracture-dislocations that are easily missed on X-ray.
