The larger back branch of the mandibular nerve, below the skull base in the infratemporal fossa.
What it does
Mostly sensory: gives the inferior alveolar, lingual and auriculotemporal nerves; also supplies the mylohyoid.
Keeping it well
A group term; its branches are the ones at risk in lower wisdom-tooth surgery.
