Intervertebral discs
Disci intervertebrales · Meziobratlové ploténky
Joints & cartilage
Looks like
A tough fibrous ring around a soft gel centre, one between each pair of vertebrae.
What it does
Cushions the spine and lets it bend and twist.
Keeping it well
Move often and change position; the gel dries with age, and a bulge presses on a nerve rather than on the back itself.
