Large intestine
Intestinum crassum · Tlusté střevo
Digestive system
Looks like
A wide, pouched frame of bowel about 1.5 m long, running up, across and down around the small intestine.
What it does
Takes water and salt back out of what is left, and houses the gut bacteria.
Keeping it well
Fibre, water, movement. Stool-test screening lowers bowel-cancer deaths in trials. In the first randomised colonoscopy trial the gain over 10 years was small — about 2 cancers prevented per 1 000 invited — with no clear fall in deaths.
