Each of the two main branches (right and left) into which the portal vein divides at the entrance to the liver.
What it does
Carries nutrient-rich blood from the gut to its half of the liver.
Keeping it well
Blocking one branch on purpose (portal vein embolisation) makes the other half grow before a large liver operation.
